A to Z Blogging Challenge - Univerities of North Florida

Florida State University
For a state normally thought of as a tourist attraction and retirement destination, Florida has a great deal of higher education going on. Take for instance the fact that the state run university system boasts 12 fully accredited universities and almost half of those are in North Florida. Then there are the private universities, of which there are 4 (in NF) and those are just the universities. On top of that Florida has state-wide, 28 community and state colleges, 21 Trade and Tech institutions, 30 private universities and colleges, and 35 religiously-affiliated institutions. That equals a total of 126 higher learning institutions in the state. The vast majority of these have visually stunning campuses and are worth a visit, just to see the grounds if nothing else!

Just a little trivia, my grandfather went to U of F and was on the football team. My father and mother went to FSU and met at a car rally there.  I once got to see Steve Martin LIVE at Stetson University!

One of the highlights of our visits to Florida was the commencement ceremony.of my great-granddaughter (long story - don't ask). I had no idea what it was until I looked it up. I imagined something called a commencement would involve something starting, not finishing.
My own schooling having been at a grammar school in England which, with 400 pupils spread over seven years, we thought to be rather large, you can no doubt imagine how I felt to be at the graduation of a single class of significantly more than that number.

  3. I have to say, from the photos, Florida State looks the most impressive :). I went to a red brick university in Canterbury so our campus was not much to look at really when it came to architecture. Went back recently and they have done parts of it up really nicely.

  6. Didn't know Florida was so full of higher learning establishments. Those are quite some buildings. The Uni of North Florida is extremely modern. You didn't say, where did you go? Or did you skip that part?

  18. Hi Lisa - what a great range of universities ... and such a great idea to take to visiting the campuses - some of them appear to be stunning .. interesting about your family not appearing to leave their State ... then you marrying a French man and copping the whole thing up!! Still you get the best of both worlds .. travel to France and the in-laws ..

    Cheers Hilary

  20. I'm actually going to a University of Florida graduation this upcoming weekend. It's a little funny because I graduated from UGA and my husband from GA Tech so aren't we basically FSU's enemies come football season? It will be fun though. We're planning a mini trip to the beach afterward. YAY!
