Gamble Rogers is a name that graces a recreation area
nestled between the Atlantic ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway, and there is
a good reason why. The name and the man meant a great deal to folks from the
area. He was a local. He was a musician, a story teller, and as some of his
friends said, “He had the gift of innocence, and a fondness for the key of ‘E’.
He was a father and husband and a man we lost too soon. In 1991he died a hero when
he swam out into rough surf to try and save a drowning man.
Gamble Rogers was awarded the Kiwanis Award for bravery, the
Carnegie Award for heroism, induction into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame,
and the NSA Lifetime Achievement Award (2001).
The kind of man he was is summed up in the name of one of
his albums, “The Lord Gives Me Grace And The Devil Gives Me Style.”
The lovely stretch of land that shares his name treats
visitors to camping, boating, bicycling, canoeing, kayaking, birding, fishing
and beach fun.
There is a website dedicated to Gamble and his legacy. Here is the link if you'd like to check it out.
