A to Z Blogging Challenge - National Navel Aviation Museum

http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/

Do you like airplanes, or anything to do with historical aviation? Then this museum is the place for you. My husband and his father, who was the chief aeronautical designer of the Concorde’s wings and nose, spent two days visiting this museum a few years ago, and want to go back. They both said there was too much to see in two days. My father in law lives in France, so we have planned for my husband and him to take another excursion down to Pensacola the next time he visits us. Here are some photos to whet your appetite!
An Italian Flying Boat from the 1920s with my father in law beside it

Hawker Harrier Early 1980s

Mitsubishi Zero WWII

Mig, 15 with my father in law (my dad shot one of these down) Korean Conflict

Grumman Duck Pre WWII

Corsair WWII

Grumman Goose 1950s

Fokker DR VII 1918

  1. Hi Lisa - what a lovely treat for your husband and his father to have together .. I hope it happens soon for them. I can't get excited about aeronautical museums .. except to marvel at the wonders they are capable of producing .. and to know that technological research in these sorts of places, then spills over to help us in our daily lives ... in one way or the other. Lovely photos .. here's to the National Naval Museum and its exhibits ... cheers Hilary

  2. My husband and my father would be in heaven in that museum :) My dad was in the RAF in his late teens and early twenties and he's the type who watches war films and complains that the planes are not the right sort :)

  3. My dad was in the Navy and we lived on the naval base in Pensacola for a couple of years. It's where I really fell in love with Florida....the weather, the beaches, the palm trees. I don't remember if we ever went to the museum, but it definitely looks like a place to visit.

  4. We have an aeronautical museum about an hour away. Never been, but a friend's son worked there for a while and they dressed he and others up in WWII pilot clothing to pose in and on the Lancasters etc. they have there. They will even take you for a ride in some of the WWII planes for a fairly hefty price. My dad was in the RAF during the war and trained pilots for 3 years in, what was then, Rhodesia. Safer than doing that in England. He then went into Transport Command. I can imagine how fascinated your hubby and father in law were with this museum.

    1. We have a friend who recently retired from the RAF. He also trained pilots, but did it over here, near Miami!

  5. My 3-year old son loves the Aviation Museum here in Ottawa. He doesn't have the attention span to stop and look closely at anything, but he especially loves to sit in the cockpit simulators and ride the wooden plane cars that you can drive all around the lobby.

  11. This is quite special to be able to see these planes with your father in law and knowing that your dad shot one of those down. Was your father in law saddened when the Concorde was taken out to pasture?

  12. Very much so Birgit. He also was on the panel of experts that had to testify during the trial to see who was a fault for the crash. Luckily Concorde won that battle...

  14. That looks like fun. I've been the aerospace museum in DC but they're limited by space.

  15. That first plane reminds me of the movie, The Wind Rises.

  16. Hey Lisa,

Oh, I had visions of a belly button museum :)

That's quite the Concorde connection. Very impressive. I love planes. Then again, I'm just plane crazy...

Thanks for your kind words on Facebook, my lovely friend.

  17. Your dad shot one down? Wow. And if two days isn't enough, then that must be one massive museum.

    1. Yep. Was honored with the Distinguished Flying Cross for it... And, I don't know if my father in law or my husband could ever have enough time in air museums!

  20. My husband's a pilot, so I've spent many hours in air museums or at air shows. I find the history of flight so interesting, but when it comes to staring at a turbine I'm not too good at doing that.

    1. How cool your husband is a pilot! You sound like my mother in law. He is always "choosing" where they vacation based on boats or planes and what is available to see/draw!

  21. Very cool! There is a similar museum in Kalamazoo Michigan I've been too. Lots of WWi as well as NASA and space shuttle stuff there.

  22. You know I'm not too big on planes, but I LOVE museums because I'm a huge nerd. Planes really are pretty cool, though :)

you know, normally i wouldnt care about planes, but after reading Unbroken and the level of detail that went into describing those planes, it's amazing to see them "in person". the movie version didnt make it feel broken down enough, you know?

  25. OMG we were just there! Last September. We went to Pensacola for my birthday and spent an entire day at the museum. My husband was coming down with what turned out to be bronchitis, so we didn't get to do the simulators, but he was feeling well enough at that time to actually enjoy the tour.

  26. My son would LOVE to be at this museum! What a treat and what beauties around! ♥
