IWSG WEBSITE |
And so the seventh month of the year is begun. How fast this year is speeding by. The summer is moving right along, fall will soon be here, and my mother-in-law’s visit has gone well. She leaves us next week and I'll be sad to see her leave. This time with her has been one of those special times in one’s life where one is truly aware and in the present, knowing this will be a memory to cherish in the future.
July is also special in that it is our anniversary month! Thirty-six years with a wonderful and patient man who is the love of my life. July is also America's birthday! Hope you have fun plans. This will be our first fourth of July in Columbus and I'm looking forward to the fireworks. I'm thankful for all the above.
Do you have things happening, now that we are in the second half of the year, that you are thankful for? Why should we wait for November to find out?!
The July question of the month is: What personal traits have you written into your character(s)?
The habit of too much introspection I think is a personal trait I have used in my writing. I also like to use traits I see of those around me, though never enough (I hope!) for them to see it, or things I’ve seen done by people I don’t know.
Our purpose at IWSG is to share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!
I am honored to be a co-host this month along with

Happy Anniversary! I hope you have a lovely fourth. I do believe, some of who we are slips into a few characters as we write. Thank you for cohosting this month, Lisa :)
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, introspection is something that I can testify too. But I have to be careful that I don't go too deep when I am reflecting through a character.

A great month for you! Glad you've really enjoyed the time with your mother-in-law.
ReplyDeleteSo nice to read your visit with your mother-in-law was a pleasure for both of you. So often that isn't the case. I share your interest in other folk's traits. A treasure trove of inspiration.
ReplyDeleteThanks for co-hosting this months IWSG blog hop. And cheers to a Happy 4th of July.

Hey, fellow co-host! That's wonderful you get along with your MIL and value your relationship with your husband so much. I'm thankful for my sisters, who I get to visit often this summer. Happy 4th!
ReplyDeleteSummer is speeding along but the weather in Nova Scotia this year has been chilly and wet so it seems even stranger to realize we are in it. Canada Day was on the first but I noticed many folk are not feeling so nationalistic these days, and I'm not either. Not sure why entirely but I have my suspicions. Glad to see our community is still intact- it is something that makes sense to me. I did not answer this month's question as I feel like all my creations are of me. I write to make sense of myself and this world I find myself in.
ReplyDeleteHappy 36 years!!! That's truly special! Time goes by too quickly, we need to be thankful for each day.
ReplyDeleteHappy 4th of July.
Lisa, thank you for co-hosting!!!
It sounds like you're having a very nice summer so far. Congratulations on your anniversary! We recently celebrated our 20th. :)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! I feel that each anniversary is special and a milestone to be honored!
DeleteI think all of our acquaintances and friends are in grave danger of winding up in one of our books, don't you? Thanks for co-hosting this month!
ReplyDeleteTotally agree!
DeleteHappy anniversary! Enjoy your 4th of July celebrations. Fireworks are always so much fun. I'm thankful for my health, having shelter and plenty of food. So many other people aren't as lucky - homeless, hungry and no access to medical care :( Always good to take stock of one's blessing and not just wait until November.
ReplyDelete"things I’ve seen done by people I don’t know" That's always fun :-) Thanks for co-hosting this month.
ReplyDeleteHappy 4th July and happy anniversary too!
ReplyDeleteI think it's fair to say too much introspection can get people in all sorts of trouble - very useful for characters!
Too much introspection? That's a thing? Happy 4th!
ReplyDeleteThank you for co-hosting! Happy Anniversary, too!
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to have enjoyed your mother-in-law's visit. Unfortunately, everything comes to an end. But there are always things to look forward to as well.
Happy anniversary! Sounds like you've had a wonderful summer. And quite right, why wait until November to be thankful. Daily gratitude makes life so much richer. Thanks for co-hosting today.
ReplyDeleteI truly can't believe that it's July already.
ReplyDeleteHappy 4th!
I do that Uber-introspective stuff as well. Boy can I annoy myself!! :P
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the anniversary and thanks for cohosting!
Happy 4th of July, Lisa Buie. We just celebrated Canada's on the 1st - in the rain :(. I love developing my novels' characters. They are a composite of my imagination; probably everything I'd love to be or do if I had the right 'stuff' for the protagonists. Developing the antagonists is a bit more tricky, treading into my dark side, LOL.
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary! Glad you enjoyed your mother-in-law’s visit. My hubby and I will be celebrating our 13th anniversary in two months.
ReplyDeleteThanks for co-hosting today! :-D
Congratulations! Every anniversary is a special milestone and I love celebrating each one!
DeletePeople often tell me that they see themselves in my characters and my writing. I take that as a compliment. And, yes, much of my own personality shows up there, too.
ReplyDeleteThanks for co-hosting this month!

Thanks for co-hosting this month, Lisa! And, you couldn't be more right: this year is going extremely fast. The older we get, the faster time flies - I truly believe that. Happy Anniversary to you. July is a crazy busy month for everyone it seems. We have our anniversary in a few days as well (I better not forget!), but only 12 years. :-)
ReplyDeleteOnly? Twelve is great! All anniversaries are special and I love celebrating each one! I mean, only you two can get you there, right?! Yay!
DeleteI am not into introspection, which might explain why I picked first thrillers, and then historical fiction as my genres. Literary fiction just wouldn't work for me!
ReplyDeleteHappy anniversary. I envy you having your mother in law to visit. I lost my in-laws way too soon. Introspection is an interesting trait. I have to think about that in relation to my characters.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on that 36 year milestone. I think that's a pretty epic achievement.
ReplyDeleteI also tend to delve into a lot of introspection when I'm writing, but then it seems to a great extent that's what writing should be about.

Happy Anniversary! It's my birthday month. :D
ReplyDeleteThanks for co-hosting.
Happy birthday!!! Hope you have a super day when it comes!
DeleteHappy anniversary! Heh, often times, my characters suffer from too little introspection. :)
ReplyDelete36 years together is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI also steal traits from people around me. Shh...don't tell. Thanks for co-hosting!
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary, Lisa, Happy 4th of July, and thanks for co-hosting. I'm not much for introspection, so my characters aren't either. Not too much, anyway. Some of my minor characters are based on people I know but try to disguise. lol
ReplyDeleteHappy anniversary. 36 years together - a very respectful number.
ReplyDeleteThanks for being a host, and happy anniversary! I think as long as we mix up the stolen traits a bit people won't catch on... too much :D
ReplyDeleteDefinitely enjoy the fireworks, and thank you for co-hosting this month!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your anniversary and thanks for co-hosting!
ReplyDeleteHappy 4th, Lisa! And Happy Anniversary! I'm glad that you are making special memories with your mother-in-law. Thanks for co-hosting today.

It's always good to hear when someone gets along with their in-laws. Glad you had a good visit!
ReplyDeleteI've used a few less-than-desirable traits from other people I know, sometimes even using their names for inspiration. Needless to say, I change the names before the manuscript appears in public.
ReplyDeleteThanks for co-hosting this month!
I always have things I'm thankful for. It's the only way to get through life without focusing on what you don't have or wish you had. I'm definitely thankful for every day that I have with my husband and daughter. I don't know what I'd do without them. :-D
ReplyDeleteThanks for co-hosting, I appreciate the camaraderie of this blog hop each month. @mirymom1 from
ReplyDeleteBalancing Act
I'm thankful its not snowing, lol. I prefer working and driving in the heat. And I did get 4 days off to spend with family. I don't think I put too much of me or my family in any of my characters; but its hard not to add something of yourself.
ReplyDeleteHappy 4th and happy anniversary!
ReplyDeleteAwesome that your visit went well. Happy 4th of July!
ReplyDeleteI hope you had a nice fireworks display! Sounds like your time with your mother-in-law was wonderful. Always nice when you can appreciate time when you're experiencing it.

Hi Lisa - it's now 7.5 months into the year ... or perhaps even 7.67 months into the year - I'm just way behind. It sounds like you've settled into Columbus - and I'm so pleased you've had a happy time with your MIL ... makes such a difference to one and all - lots of good things happening and being remembered. Congratulations to that 36 years + now ... just enjoy the rest of July - cheers Hilary
