A to Z Blogging Challenge - St. Augustine

http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/

Castillo de San Marcos
I have been visiting St. Aug all of my life and I even lived there for a few years in my early 20s, and would do so again if I could. So if you like sailing, forts, or sight-seeing of ALL kinds, history, good eating, beaches, horse drawn carriage rides, walking, bike riding, festivals, wineries, distilleries, more good food, beautiful B &B’s, draw breath… then St. Augustine is the place you want to be.

Carriage rides run all day. Bridge of Lions in the back...
Okay, I’m going to have to rein myself in here a bit because this town is one of my top, perhaps THE top town in my opinion in North Florida. St. Augustine is the oldest “city” in the nation. But that isn’t its only claim to fun. I can’t even begin to list all the things there are to do, or see, or eat. There are just toooo many. So I will give you links and I will give you visuals. And, I hope you will one day (if you haven’t already) have a chance to spend some time here.

The bay front at night.

This statue is famous and has been stolen numerous times!

The Mill Top, a favorite local hangout-turned-tourist haven.

Pirates have more fun!
Restaurants I recommend:
For its Gelato...Cafe Del Hidalgo

For Greek/American/Italian food... Georgie's Diner

    1. Yay! That was the reaction I was hoping for, and we aren't done yet!

  2. I was so hoping this would be your "S" pick, Lisa! We live in Rhode Island, and the past few winters have had us talking about moving south. After some online research, I picked St. Augustine, if we ever move to Florida. And your post confirmed it. Thank you!

    1. I wish I could live there Martha. I really do... Maybe if I ever sell movie rights? Ha ha!

  3. Sounds like a great holiday destination. Are the people who steal the statue very incompetent all the time since they keep getting it back? :)

  5. I know of a half-dozen other cities that claim to be the "oldest" city in North America, but this one is definitely one of the prettiest. :-)

    1. I know, but truly, this one has the "proof!" of being the oldest "city" not town, not colony, etc. But city, yes...

  6. I visited St. Augustine a couple years ago. You can add to the list of great things about it that it is dog-friendly! Choppy even came to supper with me!

    1. One thing I love there is being able to eat outside, and having an interesting place to walk around. St. Aug, covers both of those!

  8. When I visited Savannah, GA I opted not to go to St. Augustine as part of the trip. You are making me rethink that decision. Maybe it needs to go on my bucket list. Maybe when I take Charlie to Disney World.

    1. Yes! I would. It's fun for both kids and parents. My kids loved it and still like to visit whenever they come home, which is not often enough for me!

  10. I've been there and also wrote about St Augustine and it's special fort there, which we also visited. The material which they used for the fort amazed me since it had to ability to flex rather than shatter when hit with cannonballs. We also visited the lighthouse nearby. It was a family trip in 2005, but we missed the Flagler museum. When hubs and I drove down to Key West the following year, we saw the old highway that Flagler had made. I like Florida too.Enjoyed this!

  18. Never been there Lisa. Looks like a good place to visit. Beaufort, NC, claims the place of second oldest town in the US. That is a nice place too. I'm always up for good eating and wineries. Any particular reason that statue is stolen? The one in Savannah, Georgia from the book/movie, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil which stood in a graveyard, they eventually had to move to a museum because people were chipping pieces off it. The bench which Forrest Gump sat on also had to be moved because people tried to steal it.

  19. We spend a few days in St. Aug wayyyyy back when and I loved the place for its charm, history and all-around coolness.

Great place to visit (and we went with a Rwandan military officer who'd never seen an ocean before) so St. Aug. will always have special memories for us :)

  22. Wow! St. Augustine has it all. Thanks for the virtual tour of this lovely place, Lisa. I liked The Mill Top... what's that giant wheel in front of it? Is it just a structure or used for some work?

  23. Love these pictures. That museum is great and I wonder-is it in a former home from one of the robber Barons? The local hang out is also pretty cool to see
