Hello All, Sorry my post is late today but here it is none the less. I wanted to share the last month of my writing life with you, to share the “slog” of the “One Draft At a Time” check list that I am following, for the first time, on my current work in progress. Slog is such a descriptive word and for a writer, not a bad one. It says it all.

Mary Burton, www.maryburton.com , author of numerous works, mostly romantic suspense, gave a workshop that I attended last October. Her workshop was based on the One Draft At a Time system that she developed and uses herself. It is a thorough and thought-provoking process that has me at times pulling hair, because it involves a lot of “slogging” through, but you have to pay such attention to detail that I hope to find, at the end, that it has all been worth it! This is WORK! But writing does, eventually, come down to just that, work. Mary uses a six or seven draft system where you use each draft to check on only one thing, like a certain word, or whether the structure is good, or if the story flows. Each of these steps has their own draft. Of course there is much more to it than that, but I can’t go into details because it is her copy-written process and I honor that. Being somewhat uninspired right now, yet determined, I thought the journey I'm on a perfect subject to write of today. I hope (REALLY) to find at the end, that the process, the road map she has laid before me, will lead me to the destination that I seek. Meanwhile, I’ll continue to slog through until I know I have produced the best work I possibly can. What about you? Do you have a set process you use to edit/revise? Thanks for dropping by!

Why Does It Have To Be So Hard?

http://alexjcavanaugh.blogspot.com

I’m back to work on my WIP and it is progressing. Why then do I find it so hard sometimes to make the words read in a fashion that would make folks want to devour them, all of them? I think one of the worst things that could happen for a writer is to have someone pick up their novel, read a few pages and put it down. There are few books in my life that I’ve read where I ended up skipping to the end because I couldn’t force myself to slog through the either terrible story, horrible writing, or it just wasn’t my cup of tea. In my youth I would force myself to finish a book even though I didn’t like it just on principle. But as I’ve grown older I find I don’t have time to waste on bad or uninteresting books.

For me the ultimate criticism is to have someone never finish reading my novel. I’m sure there are people out there who have done just that, and the thought makes me cringe, and drives me to make this work in progress to be so much better. I know (intellectually) that I can’t please everyone; that my writing/stories are not for everyone, but that doesn’t mean I don’t WANT everyone to like them.
So my dilemma this month is to fight my apprehension, my fear of not enough people liking the way I write or the stories I tell, and just get on with it. Though some days it’s a struggle, it’s crazy hard, I’m sticking my chin out and keeping my butt in the chair and my fingers on the keyboard. Hope you are too…

Energize

How do you energize yourself/your story?
It’s mid-morning. You’re sitting at your desk, or wherever it is that you write, with your current work in progress in front of you. You’ve had your coffee or tea. You’ve answered all your email, commented on the blogs you follow. Now it is just you and the work in progress.
How do you get yourself over that hump of procrastination? How do you energize yourself to delve into the story you left off of yesterday at a sticky point? How do you energize that sticky point and make it sparkle, leap and hold?
I’m working on an area like this right now. I need a smooth transition, but not a boring or quick one. I need this scene to speak to more than one issue. I need this scene to take me down a few different roads all at one time. I need it to question, to move with painful slowness, but also tremble with anxiety and the need to burst forth into action. How can I make this happen? I’ve worked on the groundwork leading up to this point and always when I get here, I sit perplexed, agitated and afraid of stagnation.
Yet this morning I know I’m on the brink of something powerful. Yesterday I worked till I got in the details that needed to be there to set up this scene and now, today, I have a real chance of making this happen! I’m so excited! Can you tell? I’m going to gate crash today and make it through the blockage and the most exhilarating thing about that is that I literally can’t wait to find out what’s on the other side. Breathe, Lisa, just breathe…
So, now I’ve psyched myself up, I’ve done my groundwork, and I’m ready to go. I know I will make this scene rock. Alban is waiting, with hand outstretched, more impatient even than I am to get this show on the road.
That’s how I do it. I lay the groundwork, stop procrastinating, hype myself up into a frenzy of excitement, and take hold of my protagonist’s “hand.” Together we power through!
Go on, get energized!

Down Dog Day

Today is a down dog day. Not that I’m not writing, because here I am. But I’m uninspired. I’m slumping. I’m not in love right now with my work in progress and berating myself for not pushing hard enough to stay on task.
I know everyone has a down day but I’ve had a down week. I have written. I have lived with the story, but I don’t feel inspired by it and miss the elation of a good day’s work.
I’m glad today is Friday and this week is over. OMG listen to me whine. Okay, what do I have to moan over? Nothing really. My husband loves me, my children are off and doing well in their lives and still keep in touch with me so I can’t complain there. My family is doing great. My life is going nicely. I finished the A to Z Blogging challenge and “met” lots of new people. I’ve sold four books without trying. My second printing is about to come out.
So what is wrong with me? I don’t know. But now that I’ve whined about it I need to get over my wimpy-ness so I’ll jump hands first into my WIP and see how big a splash I can make. Maybe I just needed to complain a bit and now that I have the love will flow. Won’t know if I don’t try. So I'm off! Keep your fingers crossed for me. My chin is up, hands poised; I'm holding my breath...
